Chennai is the 367 year old city. It is the 34th largest metropolitan area and second longest seashore in the world. Founded in 1639 by the British East India Company by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, Chennai was granted land to build a trading settlement. Under the British, Madras grew to be a major city. It was the capital of the Madras Presidency that was a province which covered the parts of Southern India. Madras celebrates its commemoration day on Aug 22nd each year as Madras Day. In the year 1996, the government of Tamil Nadu renamed Madras to Chennai.
